What is the purpose of a sarong?

I have a sarong that's made out of kind of mesh netting, it looks very mermaid-y. It doesn't cover anything up (it's sheer), but I really like the way it looks. Would it be weird to wear that while swimming, or is that only for lounging around on the beach? I'll add that the sarong only covers me mid-thigh ... it doesn't even reach my knees. I really want to wear it in the ocean!

1. don't wear it in the pool. just over your suit. it's just for fashion.
2. Wear whatever you like in the ocean! Just be sure the material won't be too heavy once wet. The meshy ones are often meant to be worn in the water. Just tie it in a good knot so it won't come off. Check out www.breezybeachwear.com for some great looking beach accessories too!
3. It WILL be weird to wear while swiming, use it to walk around the beach or as you would wear regular shorts.
