What is the best way to melt batik wax?

I bought a large piece of batik wax, and I know you're not supposed to put wax directly on a heat source. Can I put it in an electric skillet? I seem to remember my junior high art teacher doing that...

  1. place a granade nicely into teh middle of the pile, then run away. cleanup can be a little harder...
  2. get an old pot or buy a cheap one from a thrift store. Put on your stove to melt the wax. If you have something (like an electric wok or electric crock pot, I guess your electric skillet is something similar) which is a pot with gets heated by electricity, that's OK as well. Always keep an eye on your hot wax, if it gets too hot it can start burning by itself. Have fun with your batik.
  3. I prefer using an old CrockPot set to low. Heat for several hours, checking periodically to see when you get the desired viscosity.
  4. A simple and cheap way is to just find a large tin can, place a chunk of the wax inside, and set it on the electric skillet. Simple and safe. Just make sure it does not get to hot or the wax may spit out!
